What are the negative aspects of Palantir Technologies?

The negative aspects of Palantir Technologies primarily stem from its highly controversial and secretive work with government and military agencies, raising significant ethical questions about data privacy, surveillance, and human rights. The company also faces serious critiques regarding its business practices, including its valuation, profitability, and customer model. 

Ethical concerns and controversies

Government surveillance: Palantir has faced sustained criticism for enabling mass surveillance. Its software has been used by the NSA and other intelligence agencies to analyze vast datasets, sparking fears of a potential surveillance state.

Immigration enforcement: The company’s work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has fueled major controversy and internal employee dissent. Its software, including the FALCON system, has been used to track and deport migrants and was a part of immigration raids and family separation policies.

Human rights implications: Amnesty International and other human rights organizations have accused Palantir of failing to conduct adequate due diligence regarding its contracts with government agencies involved in human rights abuses. Protesters have accused the company of having “blood on its hands” for its role in enabling controversial government actions.

Biased policing: Palantir’s “predictive policing” software, used by police departments like the LAPD and NYPD, has been criticized for amplifying existing racial biases in policing. This has led to lawsuits and concerns that the technology disproportionately targets minority communities.

Military targeting: Critics allege that Palantir’s Gotham platform, used extensively by the U.S. military, has been linked to civilian casualties in drone strikes. In 2019, Palantir took over the Pentagon’s Project Maven contract, which involves using AI to analyze drone footage.

Conflict of interest: The company has faced scrutiny for potential conflicts of interest, such as when Stephen Miller, a key architect of Trump-era immigration policies, was revealed to hold a stake in Palantir.

Healthcare data: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Palantir’s government contracts to handle sensitive patient data in the U.S. and UK sparked concern among privacy advocates that the information could be repurposed for surveillance. 

Business and financial criticisms

Limited market reach: The high cost and complexity of implementing and maintaining Palantir’s software restrict its market to only the largest enterprises and government agencies. This significantly limits its addressable market and hinders its potential for broad market penetration.

Revenue concentration risk: A large portion of Palantir’s revenue comes from a relatively small number of top customers, including government contracts. This creates a high degree of revenue concentration risk, as the loss of a major contract could significantly impact the company’s financials.

High costs and questionable scalability: Critics argue that Palantir is often more of a “consulting firm wrapped in software”. The need for dedicated teams of engineers to customize and maintain its platforms means that, unlike typical SaaS models, it struggles to achieve true economies of scale.

Overvalued stock: The stock market has been highly speculative regarding Palantir, with high-profile critiques, including from The Economist, calling it overvalued by traditional metrics like its price-to-earnings ratio. Some investors point to the risks of slow international growth and dependency on government spending as potential vulnerabilities.

Internal culture and high secrecy: Former employees have described a “cult-like” and secretive workplace culture, which, combined with employee activism and resignations over ethical concerns, may hinder the company’s ability to attract and retain top talent. 

Opaque practices and lack of accountability

“Neutral tool” defense: Palantir often defends itself by claiming to be a “neutral tool” provider and that the responsibility for how its technology is used lies with its clients. However, critics argue that the architecture and design of its platforms are inherently a form of policymaking and that the company has a responsibility to conduct human rights due diligence.

Closed-source and interoperability: Palantir’s proprietary, closed-source software makes it difficult to audit its algorithms for bias or verify regulatory compliance. The high switching costs also lock customers into its ecosystem, limiting transparency and competition. 

I was inspired to write this essay tonight after watching Alon Mizrahi’ latest podcast. Alon is one of my favorite people that speaks the truth about Zionism, and Palestine.

In conclusion, I believe we ALL should educate ourselves and others and at the very least, react, instead of just idly sitting by, watching each other grow old. Science and technology can be wonderful, but it ALSO can be horrifying, like the invention of the Atom Bomb. Education is one of the things that sets us apart from animals (yet there are many humans that act like animals), I may be wrong, but the preceding was my opinion about Palantir Technologies. Agree, or disagree. It’s up to you to do your own research, and decide for yourself.
